SOUTH DAKOTA OFFICIAL MAPS

Notes:

The 1932 map is known to exist with “Department of Agriculture” on the front cover, rather than “State Highway Commission.”  Other years may exist as well.  These are not detailed below.

1940 maps are also known to exist folded to the dimensions of the 1941 map, i.e. 4 x 9.25, however the cover graphics are designed for the 4 x 7.25 folding dimensions.

Many South Dakota maps have two sides that could be considered the cover. For the years 1950 – 1972, the side with the phrase “Free Distribution” is considered the front. From 1973 to 1982, if one side has the phrase “South Dakota Department of Highways”, then that is considered the back and the other side is described. If that phrase does not appear, then one side is chosen at random.

According to SD DOT, the reason for the second 1986 map was to include the name of a town (Arlington) accidentally left off the first.

SDSHS refers to the South Dakota State Historical Society map collection.
