Notes:
Maps prior to 1936 are mostly recorded from out side submissions, without actual maps having been examined. Some of these may or may not be true “officials” – for example, the 1932 issue from the Conv. & Pub. Bureau was presented by the Austin Chamber of Commerce, not a state governmental entity, and would thus not normally be included here. These are listed for now, until further information can be determined.
Maps from 1955 to the present have a code (included below) along the lower edge of the unfolded map, or in the legend. This code indicates the month, year, and edition number of the map. Until 1984, this is a 4-digit code, where the first digit indicates the month; the next two digits the year; and the final digit the edition number (1973 and 1974 only indicate the year and edition number). Starting in 1985, this code was expanded to 6 digits, with 2 digits for each item just mentioned. A listing of the known codes can be accessed below.
Some maps for several years in the 1970s were overprinted with 10 “Texas Travel Trails” (Brazos Trail, Forest Trail, etc.), shown in blue on the maps.
