WYOMING OFFICIAL MAPS

Notes:

Information on early Wyoming official maps comes from a Master’s Thesis by John R. Waggener, University of Wyoming 2001, “Putting Wyoming on the Map: The History of the Official Wyoming Highway Map.”

The State Engineer’s Office published the maps prior to 1918. The Wyoming Highway Department published the map in 1918, and from 1924 on. Maps from 1912 to 1915 probably weren’t intended for general use. The 1918 map listed below was also most likely intended for internal use only. A Wyoming State Highway Commission report notes that a smaller scale map should be printed for general distribution, but it is not known if such a map was indeed produced. The maps published from 1924 to 1931 were Condition Maps, intended for public use. However, the first color, two-sided folded maps did not appear until 1932.

Although no new map was created during 1943-44, some 1942 maps were stamped with a note on the back cover stating that they were still essentially correct, and dated 1944.  In addition, it is reported that the Highway Dept. attempted to reissue 1942 maps by placing a sticker with the 1944 date over the old date on the front cover. However, these stickers would not stay on due to the glossy paper used for the 1942 maps. It is not known if any such maps were ever issued, and if so, if any of the stickers survived.

Only 10,000 maps were issued for 1946. There are two known versions: both have the date “1946” on the cover modified from “1945”, with the 5 turned into a 6. One has the word “WHEN” before the “A Cards are just a memory…” blacked out, on the other it is whited out. On the map with the word blacked out, the 5 has been made a 6 by hand, you can see that the black ink has just barely come through the paper. “WHEN” has been blacked out by hand also, you can tell by the shine of the ink with the faint WHEN underneath. On the map with the word whited out, the 5 has been made a 6 as part of the printing process, no ink has come through the paper. And the “whiteout” was also done as part of printing.

For maps dated 1954 through 1968, it is difficult to distinguish the front from the back cover. From 1954 to 1965, the front cover is designated along with a caption at lower left of either the map side or reverse side. From 1966 to 1968, both sides have the year; only one side is described.
