The RMCA has made available for public use lists of all major and many regional petroleum companies that are known to have issued road maps in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including the dates that each of these companies are known to have issued them. These lists are basic tools tailored for use by new map collectors as well as non-collectors who come into possession of old roadmaps and want to learn more about them. They are set up so that a person who has a map, but doesn’t know anything about oil companies, can look up a name on the map and find some basic information about it.
The format is simple and easy to use. The list contains three columns. The first column alphabetically lists company names and brand names that major and regional oil companies are known to have issued roadmaps under. Because it lists both company names and brand names, many companies are listed more than once. This was done intentionally to make it easier to find relevant information no matter what name on the map is used to search. The second column lists the first and last known date of issuance for each company/brand. The third column provides context, with comments and cross-references.
These lists are separate from the RMCA’s Master Petroleum Map Catalog, a comprehensive catalog of all maps known to have been issued by oil companies intended for experienced roadmap collectors. It lists every map known to have been issued by every American oil company known to have issued a roadmap. Access to the Master Petroleum Map Catalog is limited to RMCA members. If you are not a member and wish to access information in it, join the RMCA, and you will have full access to it so long as your membership remains in good standing. As of the time of this writing, an annual membership can be obtained by making a tax- deductible donation of $20 to the RMCA.
